Simmons Hall - MIT: Blending bold architecture and Beaubois' talents

The Simmons Hall student residence on the campus of the internationally-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology is even more stunning, thanks to Beaubois.

This ten-storey building's bold architecture draws attention. The Boston Architectural Society recognized it with the Harleston Parker Medal 2004, awarded to the most beautiful architectural form in the Boston area, be it a building, monument or structure. Eight atria stud the building, bathing it in natural light during the day and brightening up the night.

Beaubois' mandate included the production and installation of perforated acoustic panels, ash-and-Corian counters and cupboards, television units, benches and shelves. The lobby reception desk is of special interest with a rounded shape that looks like brick, thanks to the creative pattern in which its solid ash blocks are arranged.

The 350 residents benefit from many services: computer rooms, physical fitness centre, music space, games rooms, multifunctional hall, coffee bar and dining room.

Distinctive architecture coupled with a creative, functional design has won this building other awards, including the 2004 Engineering Excellence Honor Award of the American Council of Engineering Companies.
