Fogg Art Museum

A 4th contract at Harvard University

Beaubois has gone back to Harvard University to take part in the renovation and enlargement of the institution's oldest museum, the Fogg Art Museum.

This huge project involves the demolition of one section, the renovation of the existing building and the construction of a new wing. Estimated at $350M, the work required the museum to close in June 2008 in order to move both exhibited and stored collections.

The artists from Ébénisterie Beaubois will have the opportunity to put their exceptional talent on display for visitors. Their masterpiece, a ceiling composed of panels measuring an impressive 7 x 14.5 feet each, will crown the auditorium and harmonize with the walls which will be decorated with two-inch-thick wood boards mounted horizontally around the room. The effect will be both breathtaking and unique, to say the least!

Beaubois will duplicate this effect in all the exhibition rooms but will also insert aluminum bars between the boards to hang the works of art. Its team will also produce the huge cabinets for the laboratories and study rooms.

To achieve these monumental architectural woodwork elements, Beaubois is using the wood of the Alaska yellow-cedar, the tallest tree in the world. Occurring in British Columbia, it grows for centuries. Rarely used, this hardwood produces very uniform boards and veneers as its tree rings are very symmetrical.

In contributing to the transformation of the Fogg Art Museum, Beaubois is opening a new window for itself on the campus of this prestigious university. Its talent is already being admired in three other buildings-Harvard Law School Hauser Hall, the Life Sciences Building and the Maxwell Dworkin Building.

The Fogg Art Museum was inaugurated in 1895. In 1925, the original building was replaced by the current structure. The Museum is famous for its Italian Pre-Renaissance, British Pre-Raphaelite (themes from the Bible, the Middle Ages, literature and poetry) and 19th century French art and holds the most significant collection of works by Picasso.
