Courthouse in Billings, Montana

Beaubois participates in the design process for the new Courthouse in Billings, Montana

When the call for tenders was issued, only 50% of the plans were completed. As the total investment by the General Services Administration (GSA) for the entire project was set at $60M, it was essential that the value of the project be analyzed in exact detail.

As the holder of the contract for all the architectural woodwork for the new courthouse, Beaubois proposed alternatives and solutions for improvements to the design without too much of an impact on the costs. This extremely stimulating exercise was carried out easily, thanks to the precision of Beaubois' drawings, a precision that has been setting it apart from its competition for many years.

Once this process was completed, Beaubois began production of the elements entrusted to it: all the furnishings for three courtrooms and judges' chambers, the wall paneling in the conference room and corridors, the caissons and cabinets. Its team is particularly pleased to be crafting the reception furniture where the figuring of the walnut veneer perfectly matches that of the accompanying wall panels of the same wood.

Harmonizing the exterior and its surroundings was another architectural goal and the design reflects the unique character of its downtown neighborhood. The addition of sandstone to the precast concrete and local landscape features weaves a note of elegance into the urban fabric.

LEED Gold certification is being sought for this leading-edge building. With its solar panels on the roof and thermal wells that, depending on the season, will heat or cool it, the building will provide an excellent working environment for those employees who currently find themselves in an asbestos-contaminated structure.

The Courthouse will house the offices of the federal Clerk of District Court's office while the U.S. Marshals Service will be on the second floor and the U.S. Attorney's Office on the third. The Magistrate's Courtroom will be located on the fourth floor and the U.S. District Court on the top floor.

The Beaubois team is delighted that its expertise and know-how have been put to good use right from the start of this project that will bring new life to downtown Billings, the most populous city in Montana.

Billings was so named in honor of the president of the Northern Pacific Railroad, Frederick H. Billings, who held that post from 1879 to 1881. It was nicknamed the "Magic City" because, at the time, people said it sprouted like magic from the moment it was founded as a railroad town in 1882.
